Ground-based SQUID gradiometer system

for high-resolution near-surface subsurface structure reconnaissance in a new kind of quality for diverse fields of application.

Jessy Smart

JESSY SMART is a novel, ground-based and SQUID-based measurement system for the fast and non-destructive investigation of the subsurface with the aim of a three-dimensional description of near-surface (up to 10 m depth) structures by means of passive magnetic mapping. JESSY SMART detects smallest differences of gradients (local directional field variations) of the Earth's magnetic field and thus offers best prerequisites for approaches of detection and characterization of localized and extended anomaly sources by most diverse approaches of reconstruction, inversion and interpretation.

Depending on the application and access possibilities, the sensor channels mounted on a non-magnetic measurement trolley can be moved across the measurement area by a towing vehicle or alternatively by hand or on a specially designed hand trolley. The complete system is equipped with sensors for position determination (inertial system) and a differential GPS (dGPS) with its own base station and can therefore operate worldwide without restrictions.

The inertial unit required for the direction-sensitive measurement principle can be used in conjunction with the dGPS for local high-resolution recording of the topography and for creating digital terrain models based on it. This functionality, especially in combination with ground-based measurement and surface-related data, offers enormous advantages in the elucidation of the near-surface subsurface situation.
